Utah Valley University's Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramic and Sculpture
 Final Project - Artist Statement

As this body of work developed, I became more interested in the production than in the product. The act of making work took precedence over the finished piece. Each piece in the series is evidence only of this production having been arrested.

Any individual piece is a complete work in itself.  However, within the context of this body of work, each piece is indicative of many aspects of the production. Because every piece has been through a slightly different process, each has a different treatment. In this way each process informed still others. The evidential processes involved elucidate the underlying production, which evades the necessity for a finished product.

For this reason, ceramic is the primary medium. It is as versatile as it is unforgiving. Utilizing a combination of low fire techniques, I used ceramic slip to encapsulate these forms. From that point each one took on a life of its own. This was accomplished with a variety of surface treatments, including combinations of burnt plastics, encaustic painting, oxide washes, vitreous engobe, terra sigillata, majolica, found objects, etc.

Although the objects themselves are not inherently significant, the “stuffed animal” often elicits sentimental recollections of childhood. As each developed, evidence of process is recorded. Disfigurements occurred in some; in others they were merely revealed.

Submission Slides

These are the pieces I had selected to represent the summation of my work within UVU's BFA Program. These slides were submitted to the Woodbury Art Museum for consideration in the "BFA Finals" Exhibition within which I was accepted.

I've since updated the URL due to the fact that the old URL is no longer mine. (Good thing I printed thousands of these. Otherwise I wouldn't have anything to throw away now.)
